Shalom Gilboa Community,
At Gilboa, Shabbat is a communal experience that the entire camp participates in creating.
This Friday, after everyone took a post-tiyul shower, we watched a movie and ate our traditional Friday pizza lunch. Then, kvutzot (age groups) were assigned into Shabbat tasks, each group taking charge of preparing a different aspect of Shabbat. Some were in charge of setting the chadar (dining hall) for Shabbat dinner, some in charge of preparing the Oneg (Shabbat skit), some in charge of preparing the blessings - both traditional and their personally written ones. Each week a different group is in charge of writing the Shabbat Blog - telling our friends and family outside of camp a little about our experience the past week at machaneh. Here is our first Summer 2014 Shabbat Blog - from our Sayalim kvutza.
GETTING TO GILBOA
On the first day of machaneh Gilboa, everyone is excited to see you when you get off the bus. There is a lot of ruach and it feels good. We figured out our age group and at lunch we played and sang. Once we finished lunch we moved into the cabins. On the next couple of days we did a lot of activities. We went kayaking, played basketball, went to the pool and more.

PISH
A “PISH” is a peulat-shichva which means an age-group activity. We learn a lot from pishes. Pish helps us grow. One of our pishes this week was about finding “kvutza” and its meaning. In this pish we had a scavenger hunt, did a trust walk and helped Yahli make a PB&J sandwich (to practice our communication with each other). In two other pishes we made chocolate chip cookies and learned about kupa (communal fund) and read a story called “Baby X”. Overall, pish is fun, cool and we learn a lot from it. Thanks, and Sayalim are awesome.

TOCHNIT EREV
Our favorite night activity (tochnit erev) was the Feminist Superheroes!
We went around camp, learning about different people who helped with feminism and claim to be the leader of it. We learned that boys and girls can break out of their shells, because they have a right to and everyone is equal. We all learned a fun dance together from Beyonce (one of the characters), and danced around the pool. We all helped save feminism together!

TIYUL
On tiyul, we went on a five mile hike. At first, when we headed of, Benny (the camp dog) followed us, even though he wasn’t even supposed to. We trekked on and on, only stopping for food and water. We took one major stop for lunch and games. When we finally went on, it turned out that Benny had eaten part of plastic garbage bag. We all worried for him, but it turned out that he was fine. We arrived (finally) at our campsite - and there was nobody in sight. But then we finally found the Bonim. After that, we settled in, and then the other kvutzot arrived. Later, we had kibbud and then chuggim (which was really fun). We played two rounds of all-camp infection (we survived)!
After that, we had dinner (hot dogs) and had a kumzits, where we sang lots of fun campfire songs (although there was no fire). Then, we changed our clothes, wrapped ourselves up in our sleeping bags, and then talked under the cosmos. Some of us went to bed early, but some of us stayed up till midnight.
We woke up in the morning, played a little bit and then went back to camp (it turned out that we were really close). It was one of the most fun hikes we’ve ever had.
