Yom Meyuchad!

As we near the end of First Session, we’ve realized how fast this last week has been and in turn, how much fun we’ve been having this summer. On Wednesday night, the machaneh performed dance numbers to 80s songs by shicvot for Gilboa Idol which ended in a short machaneh dance party. The next day was our Yom Meyuchad (Special Day), arguably the day that tzevet and madatz devote most of their energy to and the day our chanichim look forward to the most. The theme this summer: Corn.

The first part of Yom Meyuchad was spent glorifying King Korn and all his Kernels and Corn Priests with a breakfast and lunch copious with corn food products from corn on the cob and corn chowder to corn milk and corn bread. After playing a scavenger-hunt game where we learned about the esteemed history of King Korn and collected corn collectibles, the second half of the day was taken over by Fruit Deviants who began a fruit revolution. Under the leadership of Queen Quinoa, we learned about subsidizing and monoculture problems in agriculture, played health games, and learned about environmentalism and fossil fuels. The end of the day culminated with an overthrow of King Korn and his Corn Priests and Kernels with a large game of tag and a healthy dinner of wraps filled with vegetables and lentils at the medurah.

We can’t believe that it’s once again Shabbat and that tomorrow is our final mesibah for first session. Currently, the entire machaneh is at their puellah shicvah (age group activity) and after lunch we will once again have our Shabbat rotations of preparing the song for kabalat Shabbat, making challah, preparing kishutim, oneg planning, and learning the blessings.

In the past few days, there have been more cases of chanichim with runny noses or sore throats. However, there has yet to be a breakout of strep throat or anything more malignant. We believe this has a lot to do with the mandatory sessions of washing hands before meals and the more time spent being attentive towards cleanliness in tzrifim. Much of the recent complaints of runny noses and scratchy throats, we’ve been told, have to do with the change of weather (it seems like it’s rained more than it has in past summers) and the altitude. Still, we keep reminding our chanichim to not share water bottles and continue to keep an eye on ways we can prevent spreading any sicknesses.

Shabbat shalom to everyone from all of us at machaneh!
