Last 24 hours......Shabbat Shalom!!

The last twenty-four hours have been exciting and filled with lots of madrichim accents and a tremendous amount of machaneh energy. After a full normal day with our usual activities, last night’s dinner was interrupted not only to celebrate Kara Segal’s birthday but also to commence our tochnit erev (night activity) – Zap, a game where chanichim try to get from one side of machaneh to the other without getting “zapped” (flashlight tagged) by the hidden madrichim and madatz. The tochint erev – arguably the most popular one for our chanichim – was the most successful version we’ve run in recent memory at Ta Ta Pochon as we were able to safely use all of machaneh as our boundary with kids crawling and sliding from one safe checkpoint to another.

Once everyone made it across to the final station, the kids went to sleep only to be woken up in the middle of the night for Aliyah Bet (We promise you it’s the only time we do something like this all summer!). The theme for Aliyah Bet was the Six Day War and as the kids came into the chadar ochel for fresh pita they were divided into five groups which toured military strategy sessions, emulated military training activities, and learned the brief historical context of the war before coming together under the leadership of Yitzak Rabin and Moseh Dayan to throw water balloons at an enemy tank (our decorated camp car) in the Golan Heights.

After a late wakeup this morning, we are back on schedule for Yom Shishi. We just finished a delicious meal of pizza, and the chanichim are now taking turns doing specific kabbalat Shabbat preparation stations such as practicing for the kabbalat song, making challah, setting up Shabbat table cloth, decorating the chadar ochel, rehearsing the oneg Shabbat, and going over the blessings for tonight.

Later the mazkirut will go to every tzrif and make sure kids have showered and cleaned up their tzrifim before we will split into our mishpachot (family groups), have kabbalat Shabbat, eat a very special Shabbat dinner, and end with our much anticipated block of rikud (dancing).

Some other notes that might be of interest:
- Tomorrow the kids get to sleep in again before starting Yom Shabbat – in most of our opinion – the best day of the week.
- We have begun to accept t-shirt designs from our chanichim for our 2008 Gilboa shirt so that we can have them ready before Yom Gilboa (Visitors Day)
- The milah shel ha yom (the ivrit word of the day) has been very successful with our chanichim and you can be sure that most of machaneh can now comfortably say such useful words such as melafafon (cucumber), meachuz (100%), and beit shechi (armpit)
- Our lovely nurse Pat also wanted to mention that she loves that our kids are washing hands before every meal. In fact, she wanted to assure all you parents that “kids are washing hands with soap and water which has decreased the amount of sick kids in the health center!”

Shabbat Shalom to you all from everyone here at Gilboa!
