It was great seeing all of you during Yom Gilboa. We had an amazing time, still have plenty of snacks and left-overs for tzevet, and are proud to announce that we raised a little more than a thousand dollars towards chanichim scholarships. Though that night was a little difficult for some of our chanichim whom experienced a bit of homesickness, we recovered the next day with a regular seder yom (daily schedule) in which we resumed our normal activities. Last night the tochnit erev was a Harrogate Fair (carnival themed) which was fun for everyone and filled with face painting, dancing, water games, night swimming, trivia stations, and sponge throwing.
The addition of the Nitsanim has contributed a huge burst of energy to a suddenly smaller machaneh. Though they have a separate program, every moment shared with them and the rest of machaneh has been treasured, with every chanich smiling at how adorable they are (like today during hitkansut erev, when they finally perfected their Booty Dance and boasted about the ice cream construction of Israel they ate).
Note: Not one of the nitsanim has complained of homesickness.
Today was Yom Yisrael. After David Ben-Gurion came to Hitkanust Boker to declare Israel’s statehood, we all went to a breakfast of Israeli salad, toast with chocolate spread, chocolate milk, cottage cheese, and hard boiled eggs. The rest of the morning was spent through round robin stations where kids toured a Bedouin Tent, learned about the Knesset, participated in irrigation games at a kibbutz, and played trivia games from an Israeli time line. Once lunch started (shuk style), the chanichim entered and were frisked before beginning to purchase falafel, hummus, salad, sabich (eggplants), and shakshuka. We then played a machaneh tournament of soccer before going to the Kinneret (the pool) and dancing brikud (rikud in the water), eating watermelon and drinking ice-coffee, and lounging around. Right before dinner, each shicvah had a puellah about the IDF before joining together during Hitkanust Erev to present what we learned throughout the day. We just finished a delicious dinner of schnitzel, mashed potatoes, and burekas. After a torch-lighting tekes, we will end Yom Yisrael with a mesibah and dance to contemporary Israeli music.
The nitsanim leave tomorrow and once again our machaneh will decrease in size. It’s been a crazy couple of days here and we are excited to have the next three days as normal ones and maybe rest a little…The summer’s end has begun to resonate with both the tzevet and the chanichim, and so we are trying to both cherish every last day and keep the ruach up.
More later…..
Thanks again for all who were part of Yom Gilboa!
