First Shabbat at Camp

Shabbat Shalom from Gilboa!

The first Shabbat at Machane feels like a cool sip of soda--sweet and refreshing.

From the early hours of the afternoon, camp started to prepare for Shabbat - the kvutzot (age groups) each were in charge of a different aspect of the preparations - Setting up the dining hall for Shabbat dinner, making Shabbat decorations, preparing the blessings, and a song to be sung to the entire camp. Then they headed to clean their cabins, shower, rest and prepare themselves for Shabbat.

Everyone gathered for Hitkansut Erev (evening gathering). A perfect opportunity to take some photos together as a kvutza and with older and younger campers.

BONIM (and Rotem)

We sang Hatikvah, and then split into check-ins by Mishpachot (groups of kids based on home locations), where everybody had a chance to talk about their first week at camp.
Everyone gathered back together and we walked hand in hand to the lake.

Bonim sang a song, we heard a story from our Rosh, Noah, greeted Shabbat with a song and then, Shabbat hugs!

Tzevet mitbach (kitchen staff) cooked up a delicious feast (chicken, potato burekas, broccoli, fresh baked challah, salad) that we digested over a rousing Shabbat Shira (singing). Later we had an Oneg (Shabbat Skit) from the Madatz and did Rikkud (Israeli dancing) late into the night.

Shabbat itself had been reflective and relaxing. We began with Yachad, a discussion of the weekly Torah Portion (Balak). Musical and Medurah--open mic sessions in which chanichim demonstrate their musical and comic talents--were highlights, as always. We ended the day with our traditional Havdallah under the stars. Best of all we had Burgers for Dinner, and ice-cream for late night snack!!!
